Man Reports Money Lost In IRS Scam

A local man who was recently targeted in an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) scam wishes to warn others not to fall victim to the same ploy.

The victim, age 67, spoke with Lawrenceburg Police officers on Monday. He reported that he had lost $1,000 after being contacted in the fraud.

According to the victim he had received a telephone call from two men who claimed to be representatives of the IRS. The men told him that he owed $4,500 and that if he did not pay the amount he owed, they would seize his house.

The victim told the men that he could only pay about $1,000 at that time, but could pay the balance later. They instructed him to go to Kroger and put the $1,000 on a card, then give them the card information. The victim said he did as instructed but later learned that it had been a scam.

Residents are reminded to never give money in such a situation without first checking with law enforcement agencies to ensure that the claim is valid.
